Common Questions

How do I tell if my record is a first pressing?+

Check the dead wax — that's the smooth area between the last groove and the label. You'll find matrix numbers etched or stamped there. A/B or A1/B1 stamper codes often indicate early pressings. The label matters too — logos, addresses, and text change over the years. For example, early UK Parlophone labels have a gold/black design that later became silver/black. Discogs is your best friend here — search the catalogue number, compare matrix codes. First pressings are usually worth significantly more, but condition is king. A VG+ first pressing might be worth less than a NM reissue depending on demand.

What does VG+ actually mean?+

Goldmine grading scale — the industry standard. Mint (M) means literally perfect and unplayed, still sealed. Near Mint (NM) is nearly perfect with maybe some minor sleeve handling marks. Very Good Plus (VG+) shows some play but sounds great with only light surface noise in quiet passages. Very Good (VG) has consistent play wear and noticeable surface noise. Good Plus (G+) has heavy wear but plays through. Good (G) is very heavy wear. Fair and Poor are basically damaged. Most records you'll find at car boots and charity shops are VG to VG+ range. That's perfectly fine for listening — not everything needs to be NM.

Is vinyl actually better than digital?+

Honestly mate? It depends what you mean by "better." A well-mastered vinyl on a decent setup can sound incredible — warm, dynamic, present. But a well-mastered high-res digital file through good headphones is technically more accurate. The real difference is the ritual. You choose an album. You pull it from the sleeve. You place it on the platter, lower the stylus. You listen to a full side because getting up to skip tracks is effort. That intentionality changes how you hear music. Plus album art at 12 inches is proper art. So is vinyl "better"? It's different. It's more intentional. And it's more fun. That's enough for me.

My records sound crackly — what's wrong?+

Could be a few things. Most common: dirty records. Give them a proper clean — a Spin-Clean is about 80 quid and it's the best investment you'll make. Static is another big one — get an anti-static brush and use it before every play. Carbon fibre, one revolution, lift off. If the crackle is on every record, check your stylus — a worn or damaged stylus will make everything sound rough and it's damaging your records every time you play. Replace styli regularly (every 500-1000 hours depending on the cartridge). Also check your tracking force — too light and the stylus bounces, too heavy and it digs in. Your cartridge manufacturer will have a recommended range. And store records in proper anti-static inner sleeves — those paper ones that come with records are rubbish.

Where's the best place to buy vinyl in the UK?+

Independent record shops are the heart and soul. Spillers in Cardiff is the oldest record shop in the world — since 1894. Rough Trade in London (East, West, and Denmark Street). Jumbo Records in Leeds. Piccadilly Records in Manchester. Sister Ray and Phonica in Soho. For bargains, record fairs are unbeatable — VIP Record Fairs run them all over the country. Charity shops and car boot sales still turn up gold if you're patient. Online: Discogs is the marketplace. Juno for electronic and dance. Norman Records for indie. And don't sleep on eBay — filter by "sold" prices to know what things actually sell for, not what people are asking.

What's the best starter turntable?+

For brand new on a budget: Audio-Technica LP60X (around 130 quid, fully automatic, built-in preamp, just plug in and go). When you're ready to step up: Audio-Technica LP120X (around 300 quid, direct drive, proper counterweight, upgrade path for cartridges) or a Rega Planar 1 (around 280 quid, belt drive, beautiful build quality). The jump from a cheap all-in-one to any of these is massive — like going from watching telly through a window to sitting on the sofa. But honestly? If you've got a Crosley suitcase player and you're enjoying music, that's what matters. The upgrade will happen when you're ready. Don't let gear snobbery put you off the music.

Are coloured vinyl records worse quality?+

This one's complicated. In the old days, coloured vinyl could be slightly noisier than standard black because the carbon black in regular vinyl actually helps with static and consistency. But modern pressing technology has mostly closed that gap. A well-pressed coloured record from a decent plant sounds just as good. The exceptions: picture discs are genuinely sonically compromised (the image layer sits between the vinyl layers, so the groove quality suffers). And super-transparent or heavily marbled records can sometimes have issues. Original coloured pressings from the 60s-80s are often collectible because they were limited runs. Modern coloured reissues are everywhere and rarely add value. Buy them because they look nice, not as investments.

How do I sell my vinyl collection?+

First: check Discogs for sold prices, not listed prices. That's what people actually paid. Grade honestly — sellers who overgrade get bad feedback fast. For valuable records (50 quid+), list them individually on Discogs. For bulk collections, your local record shop might make an offer for the lot — you'll get less per record but save hours of listing. Record fairs are great if you want to sell face-to-face — rent a table and bring the good stuff. For common records in average condition: be realistic, they might be worth more as listening copies than resale stock. And never chuck records in a skip without checking — that battered box in the attic might have a first pressing worth hundreds.

Cleaning Your Records

1️⃣

Before Every Play: Anti-static carbon fibre brush. One revolution with the record spinning, then lift off towards the centre. This removes surface dust and reduces static. Takes 5 seconds. Do it every time.

2️⃣

Deep Clean (weekly diggers): Spin-Clean Record Washer (~80 quid). Velvet pads scrub both sides while the record rotates in cleaning fluid. Dry with lint-free cloths. The difference on charity shop finds is night and day.

3️⃣

The Nuclear Option: Ultrasonic cleaners (Degritter, HumminGuru). They use high-frequency sound waves to blast dirt from the grooves. Expensive (400 quid+) but nothing cleans deeper. Worth it if you're serious about your collection.

Storage Rules

Always store vertically. Like books on a shelf. Never stack horizontally — the weight warps the bottom records.

Replace paper inner sleeves with anti-static poly-lined or MOFI sleeves. Those old paper inners scratch your records every time you pull them out.

Use outer sleeves. Clear polypropylene. Protects the artwork and keeps dust out. Pennies each, saves pounds of damage.

Keep away from heat. No radiators. No direct sunlight. No attics (temperature swings). No garages (damp). A Kallax shelf in a normal room is perfect.

Don't pack too tight or too loose. Tight = ring wear on the sleeves. Loose = records lean and warp. Snug but comfortable — like a good hug.

Stylus Care

The stylus is the needle — the tiny diamond-tipped point that reads the grooves in a record and turns them into sound.

Replace regularly. A worn stylus damages records. Budget styli (needles): every 300-500 hours. Quality styli: 500-1000 hours. If in doubt, replace it.

Clean before every session. Stylus brush (back to front only, never side to side). Or a gel pad — just lower the stylus onto it and lift. Magic.

Check tracking force (how hard the stylus presses into the groove). Too light = skipping and mistracking. Too heavy = excessive groove wear. Get a digital stylus gauge (10 quid) and set it to your cartridge's (the unit that holds the stylus) recommended range.

Handle with care. Never touch the diamond tip. Never lower the stylus onto a spinning record without the cueing lever (the small arm that lowers the stylus gently). And for the love of all that's holy, never leave the stylus sitting in the run-out groove (the silent area at the end of a record).
